UPDATED – NFL’s Super Bowl Logo System
UPDATED
Well, it looks like NBC Sports guessed wrong.
I blogged earlier about a report on NBC Sports that suggested that the NFL’s new Super Bowl logo standard may be the ditching of Roman numerals. Wrong.
The NFL just unveiled their new Super Bowl logo standard, where the design would remain the same except for the host stadium in the background and, of course, the Roman numerals changing yearly.
Here’s what the new Super Bowl logos will look like starting in 2011.

It’s an ok design. I like the overall metallic look, but it may get boring year after year. Even though this year’s logo doesn’t have any references to Miami or Florida, I liked how the previous Super Bowl logos had a color scheme and graphical elements in the logo that represented the city that was hosting that year’s Super Bowl.
Meh.
…..
The NFL is set to unveil their “new Super Bowl logo system” on Thursday. Here’s the story from NBC Sports:
The NFL has announced that, on Thursday at the Super Bowl XLIV Media Center, a “new Super Bowl logo system” will be introduced.
If you don’t quite know what that means, welcome to the club.
The announcement offers no other details, and our best guess at this point is that the league will begin to incorporate conventional numbering into the traditional Roman numeral approach, with “45″ tastefully and discreetly being added to next year’s “Super Bowl XLV” design.
The logo for next year’s Super Bowl also will be revealed at the Thursday press conference.
I like this and I don’t like this.
The pro: Well, I won’t have to spend a half an hour figuring out what all those Roman numerals mean in order to see which Super Bowl I’m actually watching.
The con: The Roman numerals are a cool art element to work with when designing the logo. More visually appealing than numbers, in my opinion.

The Super Bowl logo shown here would have to be in my top five. It really is a nice looking and clever piece of design work.

BRAND NEW has a nice article on this year’s Super Bowl logo here.

I’m conflicted about this announcement but I won’t make a judgement until the new system is unveiled. Though I will say I’m not excited about the idea of dropping the Roman Numerals, and having the same Super Bowl logo every year. I always found it exciting to have a new unique logo for every Super Bowl.
or, on second thought, am I misreading this announcement? Is the only change really just the Roman Numerals?
Just updated the article Alex. Looks like Roman numerals are here to stay. And, after thinking about it, that style of numbering is unique to the NFL and their Super Bowl logos. Would be silly for them to ditch it.
This new logo system is well executed and appropriate but I am going to miss having a truly unique event logo every year. I’m with you – meh.
Looks an awful lot like the Stanley Cup patches. Not that it’s a good thing, but it’s nice to see the NFL copying the NHL for once.
I have a feeling that the biggest problem is how squat the Super Bowl logos have gotten. They’re very wide, simply because of the number of numerals, and how it’s more appealing that way. Where it becomes a problem, is to create a stitched version in any legible size, has to be huge. Look at the Colts for this year, that patch looks crammed in there between the collar and the shoulder stripes. By creating more vertical space, the NFL is probably looking to change that.
Maybe they’ll loosen the reins at some point, and allow some city-based fluff. I could see a palm tree sneaking in for the next floridian game.
NFL Super Bowl competition takes place. This is a very important sporting event for not just millions of Americans in the USA but around the world. In fact of all live television broadcasts that take place in the USA during the year this is the event that is watched the most
