Below is their Eagles redesign. As a Philadelphian, and lover of all Philly sports teams, I’d have to say that the Eagles redesign wouldn’t fly out here. If anything, we want the old school, football-clutching, flying eagle.

But it’s cool to see some other artists take on NFL team logo redesigns.

Nike has presented its Team USA basketball uniforms for the 2012 Olympics in London.

One word to describe them is light.

The Nike Hyper Elite Basketball Uniform combines Nike’s “lightest, most technologically advanced textiles with iconic graphics,” which helps “boost players’ performance and communicates the pride of USA Basketball,” according to Nike’s Web site.

Both the Team USA basketball jersey and shorts utilize Nike Aerographics, a fabric created in 2008 that acts as a cooling solution, and further refined for the Summer Games. Nike says it allows for greater design and graphic flexibility and also contributes to performance by increasing air circulation.

There will be a nostalgic feeling in the air this year when the Braves wear their newest alternate jerseys during Saturday and Sunday home games. The cream-colored jersey design is very similar to the one the franchise was using when it moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta in 1966. It will be worn with cream-colored pants and the traditional navy cap with red brim.

“I think the look is fantastic,” said Derek Schiller, Braves vice president of sales and marketing. “It is very classic and fitting of our tradition. It pays respect to the period when the team moved to Atlanta and when Hank Aaron and others donned the uniform.”

In case you haven’t heard, the Carolina Panthers have updated their primary logo and logotype. While it’s an upgrade over the original logo, I still find it lacking. There are a few areas of sloppy design work that, if addressed, could really make this design a winner.

Take a look for yourself with the before and after image below (courtesy of SportsLogos.net)

Rather than go into detail on why it’s still bad, I’ll just show you how it SHOULD look. Below is a concept by Fraser Davidson.

Update: Here’s a full body Panther logo by Fraser…

Fraser’s concept still resembles the look and feel of the original Panthers logo but all of the lines are clean and precisely rendered. The logo is bold and fierce … and the bottom lip doesn’t look like a Botox injection gone bad.

Take a look at the new Panthers logotype… Yeah, I don’t know why the “A” letters are inconsistent either. Other than the inconsistent treatment of the “A” letters, I don’t mind the new logotype. It’s an improvement over their original, which looked like they borrowed a font from a t-shirt that you’d see on the Atlantic City boardwalk in the 1980s.

New logotype:

Old logotype:

All in all, it’s a minor upgrade. But the upgrades are still not that good. Next time the Panthers want to modernize their logo, they should contact Fraser Davidson.

Here’s Fraser’s concept on a helmet:

Astros owner Jim Crane had a lot to unveil Monday, including a potential uniform change and the possibility of renaming the team. Crane told reporters a name change was under consideration but not a sure thing. “There’s a lot of expense to it,” said Crane. “We’ve got signs here. And if we do change it, it’s going to be expensive. Like I said, it’s under consideration. We haven’t said we’re going to do that, so don’t jump to any conclusions.” Crane also said a change in uniforms could come as early as 2013.
